How much does a tarmac driveway cost?

Every driveway is priced after a site visit, because what is under the ground matters as much as the size. Here is what makes the difference to the price.

What sets the price

Nine things that make the difference

These are the questions we answer at the site visit. Every photo is from one of our own jobs.

From the air: tarmac being laid around a house in the country

The size

Length and width set how much tarmac and stone the job needs, and how long it takes. A long country driveway is a different job to a front garden in town.

Housing estate job: digging out on the estate

What comes out first

Grass, soil, gravel, old concrete or broken tarmac: how much has to be dug out and taken away before anything new goes down.

Ardnore: the stone base rolled and ready for tarmac

The base

How much stone it takes to build a solid, compacted base. Soft ground needs more. This is the part that decides how long the driveway lasts.

A tarmac yard with a channel drain across the back door

Drainage

Where the water goes now, and where it should go. A channel drain or a gully at the right spot stops water lying on the drive or running to the house.

A tarmac driveway with a curved kerb to the lawn

Kerbing and walls

Kerbs along the edges and around beds, and any block work or walls the driveway needs.

A tarmac entrance between stone piers, taped off while it sets

The entrance

Widening the entrance, building or rebuilding piers, and where the driveway meets the road.

Housing estate job: tipping the next load

Access

Whether a lorry, paver and roller can get in, or the tarmac has to be barrowed in by hand.

How it will be used

Cars only, or vans, tractors and lorries. Heavier traffic needs a deeper base.

Services

Ducting for lights, gates or anything you might add later, laid before the tarmac so it never has to be dug up.

Is there a price per square metre?

Size is only part of the price. Two driveways of the same size can be very different jobs: one needs digging out, a new base and kerbs, the other only a new surface. So the price comes after a site visit, in writing, for your driveway.
