The base is what lasts
Tarmac is only as good as what is under it. The ground is dug out, the stone base is laid and compacted, and only then does the tarmac go down. That is what stops a driveway sinking and cracking.
How long it lasts
Laid right and looked after, a tarmac driveway can last 25 years. Very heavy use can mean some repairs after 10 to 12 years.
Looking after it
Very little upkeep. Keep oil and diesel off it, because they break down the tar faster than the weather does.
Think ahead
Before the tarmac goes down is the time to lay ducting for lights, electric gates or anything you might add later, so nothing has to be dug up.
